Surfing Josiah's Bay: The Complete Guide
Josiah's Bay is a sandy-bottom beach break located in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, offering both lefts and rights along the Caribbean's tropical waters. Josiah's Bay is the BVI's best learn-to-surf spot—a beach break on Tortola's east coast that produces fun A-frame peaks suitable for beginners and intermediates. Rated as beginner-friendly difficulty with lightly crowded conditions, this beach break is a worthy destination for surfers looking beyond the usual suspects.
Best Conditions
Swell Direction: The ideal swell direction is N (350°), with workable conditions from NW to NNE (320°–20°). Swells outside this window will either miss the break or produce disorganized waves.
Swell Size: Josiah's Bay needs a minimum of 0.8m / 3ft to start working and handles swells up to 2m / 7ft before conditions deteriorate.
Swell Period: Look for a swell period of at least 10 seconds, with 14 seconds being the sweet spot. Longer periods deliver more organized, powerful waves with better shape.
Wind: True offshore here blows from the SE (135°). The full offshore range spans E to S (100°–170°). Glassy conditions under 4km/h from any direction also produce excellent surf. Plan for early morning dawn patrol sessions.
Tide: This spot works best at all tides. Optimal tide range is 0.2m–2.5m.
