Surfing Massawa: The Complete Guide

Massawa is a sandy-bottom beach break located in Northern Red Sea, Eritrea, offering both lefts and rights along the continent's diverse coastline. Massawa represents the absolute frontier of Red Sea surfing—an ancient port city in Eritrea where winter monsoon winds occasionally generate short-period swells along the African coast. Rated as beginner-friendly difficulty with uncrowded conditions, this beach break is a worthy destination for surfers looking beyond the usual suspects.

Best Conditions

Swell Direction: The ideal swell direction is NE (50°), with workable conditions from NNE to E (20°–80°). Swells outside this window will either miss the break or produce disorganized waves.

Swell Size: Massawa needs a minimum of 0.5m / 2ft to start working and handles swells up to 1.5m / 5ft before conditions deteriorate. This is a spot that works best in smaller, cleaner swells.

Swell Period: Look for a swell period of at least 6 seconds, with 8 seconds being the sweet spot. Longer periods deliver more organized, powerful waves with better shape.

Wind: True offshore here blows from the W (270°). The full offshore range spans SW to NW (230°–310°). Glassy conditions under 4km/h from any direction also produce excellent surf. Plan for early morning dawn patrol sessions.

Tide: This spot works best at all tides. Optimal tide range is 0.2m–1m.

When to Go

Primary Season: The prime window at Massawa runs November, December, January, February (Nov–Feb). This is when swell consistency and direction align most reliably with the break.

Secondary Season: A secondary window opens October, March (Oct–Mar). While not as consistent, patient surfers can still score quality sessions during this period.

Season Notes: NE monsoon creates short-period wind swells in Red Sea.

Water Temperature: Expect water temperatures around 26°C / 79°F. Boardshorts or a thin rashguard are all you need.
