Best Cold Water Surf Destinations
Where the water bites and the rewards are bigger. Cold water surfing's best destinations.
30 spots featured
Cold water surfing is having a moment — and for good reason. While tropical lineups have become Instagram tour stops, the world's coldest coastlines deliver something the warm-water spots no longer can: empty lineups, raw power, and genuine adventure.
The destinations on this list have water temperatures below 16°C (60°F) for most of the surf season. That demands proper rubber — typically a 5/4 or 6/5 with hood and boots. But the tradeoff is profound. Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Ireland, the Canadian Maritimes, the Pacific Northwest — these spots offer waves of the same quality as the famous warm-water reefs, with lineups you can count on one hand.
Cold water also tends to mean cold-water-shaped waves: powerful, well-organized swells coming off open ocean, not the wind-blown chop of more enclosed seas. For the surfer who values quality over comfort, cold water is where the real rewards still live.
