Best Surf Spots in the Caribbean
Tropical island waves, warm turquoise water, and a surf scene that flies under the radar.
30 spots featured
The Caribbean is surfing's best-kept regional secret. While most people associate these islands with calm beaches and cocktails, the reality is that consistent North Atlantic swell, hurricane energy, and trade wind swells light up reef breaks and beach breaks across dozens of islands from October through March.
Barbados' Soup Bowl is a world-class reef break that has hosted international competitions. Puerto Rico's northwest coast catches every North Atlantic swell. The Dominican Republic's north shore offers long, peeling reef breaks in warm water. And smaller islands like Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Tobago hold waves that see barely a handful of surfers.
Water temperatures hover around 26-28°C year-round. The tradeoff is that many Caribbean breaks are more inconsistent than Pacific or Indian Ocean destinations — but when it's on, the combination of crystal-clear water, uncrowded lineups, and tropical island vibes is hard to beat.
