Surfing the USA
The continental USA delivers an extraordinary range of surf experiences across three coasts. California's 1,100-mile coastline catches Pacific swell from every angle and hosts the densest surf culture in the world — from Mavericks in the north to Trestles in the south. The East Coast picks up hurricane swells and winter nor'easters, with quality breaks from Florida to Maine. And the Gulf Coast offers occasional but rideable surf when storms align.
California is the heartland — Malibu, Rincon, Trestles, Steamer Lane, Mavericks. Every break has a deep history and a passionate local crew. Water temps range from frigid in NorCal (10-13°C) to mild in SoCal (15-20°C). The infrastructure is unmatched — board shops, surf academies, ding repairs, and the world's biggest media presence all sit within a short drive of quality waves.
The East Coast tells a different story. Florida's Space Coast and the Outer Banks of North Carolina light up during hurricane season. New Jersey, Long Island, and New England catch winter nor'easters that produce surprisingly powerful waves — though you'll need a 5/4 wetsuit and the willingness to surf in snow. Both coasts share one trait: deeply localized crews and a long, storied surf history.
