Surfing Ecuador
Ecuador is the budget surf traveler's secret. A short Pacific coastline crammed with consistent point breaks, warm water year-round, and prices that haven't yet caught up to its Central American neighbors — it's the kind of destination that surfers slip away to and quietly never tell their friends about.
Montañita is the cultural hub — a backpacker town with a quality right-hand point at its doorstep and a half-dozen more breaks within an hour's drive. North of there, Mompiche is a long, fast left-hand point break that fires for days when a south swell hits. The Galápagos Islands offer a separate adventure entirely — uncrowded reef breaks shared with sea lions and marine iguanas.
Ecuador sits squarely on the equator, so water temperatures stay in the 22-26°C range and the air is warm year-round. The Humboldt Current keeps things slightly cooler in the south. Combined with $5 meals, $20 hostels, and easy bus connections, Ecuador delivers more wave per dollar than almost anywhere on the planet.
