Surfing Peru
Peru is home to the longest wave on Earth. Chicama — a seemingly endless left-hand point break in the desert of northern Peru — can produce rides of over two kilometers when the swell is right. That alone is reason enough to visit. But Peru's coastline stretches over 2,400 kilometers, catching consistent Pacific swell almost year-round.
The northern coast from Chicama to Máncora offers desert point breaks in warm water. The central coast around Lima has dozens of breaks within the city limits. And the southern coast delivers powerful, cold-water waves with big swells and fewer surfers.
Peru's surf history runs deep — evidence suggests people were riding waves here thousands of years before Hawaii's surf culture emerged. The combination of incredible waves, ancient culture, and some of the best food in the Americas makes Peru a world-class surf destination.
