Surfing Panama

11 surf spots|28°C water|6 Reef, 4 Beach, 1 Point

Panama is the rare surf destination where you can score Pacific groundswell in the morning and Caribbean reef breaks in the afternoon. Two coasts, two swell windows, and a country small enough that you can chase whichever is firing.

Santa Catalina on the Pacific coast is the headliner — a long, powerful right-hand reef break regularly compared to Indonesian quality. It fires from April through October on Southern Hemisphere groundswell, with multiple takeoff zones depending on size. The surrounding region offers Punta Brava, Estero, and remote breaks accessible only by boat. The Caribbean side, particularly Bocas del Toro, picks up winter swells from the north and offers an entirely different vibe — Afro-Caribbean culture, reef breaks over crystal water, and a backpacker scene that runs on island time.

Panama's combination of warm water (26-28°C year-round), affordable prices, English widely spoken, the U.S. dollar as currency, and reliable infrastructure makes it one of the most accessible Latin American surf trips. And with two coasts catching swell on opposite seasons, there's always somewhere worth chasing.
